About Dr. Butcher
When Dr. Butcher was growing up, he was a newspaper delivery boy with a route that included three hospitals. He says that sparked his initial interest in pursuing medicine as a career. The first member of his family to graduate from college, he was drawn to orthopedic surgery because he likes fixing broken things. After graduating from medical school at West Virginia University, he completed his internship at Baylor College of Medicine/Ben Taub Hospital. His orthopedic surgery residency was done at the U.S. Navy Hospital Oakland and the University of California at San Francisco. A Vietnam vet, Dr. Butcher spent 12 years in the Navy, where he piloted aircraft and served as a flight surgeon. Shortly after entering civilian life, he set up practice in Los Gatos, where he has worked ever since.
Dr. Butcher is a gentle, highly skilled, board-certified surgeon who embraces the three A’s of his practice: availability, affability, and accessibility. Along with enjoying a 40-year career fixing broken bones and arthritic joints, Dr. Butcher is partial to the technology that helps him accurately diagnose orthopedic conditions. He is pleased that patients have access to fluoroscopy right in the office. This sophisticated type of “moving” X-ray machine allows him to see patients’ bones, muscles, and joints, and assess how they are functioning. Like Dr. Aptekar, he believes in using conservative treatment methods before considering surgery. The number of surgical cases he personally performs has tapered off, and he now often collaborates with Dr. Sagoo on larger cases. Dr. Butcher is particularly interested in the role obesity plays in low back pain. He is highly skilled at evaluating back problems and administering in-office epidural spinal injections, a very effective nonsurgical solution for alleviating pain in many of his patients.
Dr. Butcher’s commitment to patient satisfaction sparked an interesting social experiment. The white coat effect is when patients’ blood pressure is higher when it is taken in a medical setting than at home. Dr. Butcher conjectured that perhaps the white coat was causing other issues and his own non-scientific conclusion was that patients feel more comfortable when he doesn’t wear it! Among other benefits to his patients, Dr. Butcher embraces the philosophy of accessible, friendly care, which translates into same-day appointments and 24/7 availability.
My philosophy is to keep things simple: diagnose, treat, and cure. If you're sick, we'll see you quick!
Dr. Butcher and his wife are proud parents to three grown sons and enjoy spending time with their two grandchildren. In top physical shape, Dr. Butcher knows the importance of staying fit and active, especially the role it plays in preventing spine and joint-related problems. He loves snow skiing and water skiing, but also counts mountain climbing among the spectacular activities he delights in. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania as well as Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevada Range. The ocean is just a short drive away, so in his leisure time, he likes going to the beach.
